Office of Grants and Program Development

Our goal

The Office of Grants and Program Development seeks public and private funding in order to fulfill the district’s mission of educating all students for college and career, citizenship and life in partnership with our diverse community.

About the office

The Office of Grants and Program Development identifies, applies for, secures, and monitors funding from federal and state government sources and private foundations.   These may be entitlement funds or competitive grants. Grants may benefit the entire district, individual schools, and/or specific programs and last for one year or several years.

Grants allow us to pilot new projects, expand initiatives that benefit students and families, and meet the professional needs of educators. This often includes collaborating with community-based organizations and other community partners to reach district goals and priorities.

Grant awards

For the 2018-2019 school year, the Office of Grants and Program Development manages more than $23 million in grant awards.

New and continuing grants include:

  • Teachers of Tomorrow: Provides incentives that encourage prospective teachers to teach in a school district experiencing a teacher shortage or subject area shortage.

  • 21st-Century Community Learning Centers: Establishes after-school and summer enrichment programming for students in prekindergarten through high school.

  • Empire State After-School Program Grant: Establishes after-school and summer enrichment programming for students in kindergarten through middle school.

  • Expanded Prekindergarten: Increases the availability of full-day, prekindergarten placements for three and four year old children in community-based locations.

  • Math-Science Partnership: Establishes a two-year, math-focused professional development series for grades 1-2 teachers and building leaders.

  • Community Schools Grant Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy:  Supports the implementation of a Community Schools Model.

  • Perkins Career and Technical Education: Helps Albany High School and Abrookin Career and Technical Center provide students with a strong experience and understanding in select professional industries, promote college and career readiness and improve quality career education pathways.

  • My Brother’s Keeper Challenge Grant: Implements strategies aimed at improving the life outcomes for disadvantaged youth of color and supports the following three MBK goals: Entering school ready to learn; Reading at grade level by third grade; and Reducing Code of Conduct violations and providing a second chance.

  • School Improvement Grant: Helps to support school improvement efforts at Focus and Priority schools.
