New administrative appointments as district looks ahead to 2017-18

ALBANY, N.Y. (June 2, 2017) -- The City School District of Albany Board of Education made three administrative appointments at its meeting June 1, filling important school leadership positions for the 2017-18 school year.

The board appointed veteran Eagle Point Elementary School Principal Kendra Chaires-Francis to serve as the new principal at Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy. Chaires-Francis will replace John Murphy at Schuyler.

Chaires-Francis has worked in the district since 2002, beginning as a special education teacher. She has served as principal at Eagle Point since 2009. The district will begin the process of hiring a new principal for Eagle Point immediately, with the expectation of having that person in place for the start of the 2017-18 school year.

The board also appointed Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School Assistant Principal John Powell as the new principal at Montessori Magnet School. Powell will replace Malik Jones, who will take over as a co-principal at the district’s new middle school at 50 North Lark St.

Powell came to the district last fall in his role at Myers. Prior to that, he spent 16 years in the Stillwater Central School District, the majority of it at the elementary level: as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. Stillwater Elementary School, and the district in general, experienced strong gains in student performance during his time as principal.

Powell began his professional career as a special education teacher in South Glens Falls and at the Wildwood School in Latham.

To fill Powell’s assistant principal position at Myers in 2017-18, the board appointed veteran district educator Lisa House.

House has worked in the district since 2004, primarily at the middle school level. She taught sixth grade at the former Philip Livingston Magnet Academy and William S. Hackett Middle School from 2006-13. She served as a literacy coach for three years, and since April 2016 has served as school improvement manager at Hackett.

The mission of the City School District of Albany is to educate and prepare all students for college and career, citizenship and life, in partnership with our diverse community. The district serves more than 9,600 students in 17 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students, including four themed academies at Albany High School.
