Great things are happening in Albany's public schools!

Luyanda Pieterse, sixth grade

Pine Hills Elementary School

It’s no accident that Pine Hills Elementary School sixth-grader Luyanda Pieterse is photographed in front of a sign that says “Leadership Lane.”

Luyanda is a natural leader and uses his excellent listening skills to be a true friend to everyone. Although he is quiet young man, he eloquently gets his point across on matters of great importance. He is a trusted friend to his classmates.

A highly focused scholar, he enjoys science and technology. In fact, Luyanda is one of the main designers of the student-created and -managed website at Pine Hills Elementary School. He also was a finalist last year in the city-wide Joseph Henry Science Fair and is a member of the school's Library-Media Club.

Luyanda plays trombone in the school band and the All-City Band. He received an outstanding score -- the top ranking -- at last year's New York State School Music Association festival.

He takes every opportunity to contribute to the school community. That’s why Pine Hills Elementary School is proud to recognize Luyanda Pieterse as an exceptional student for 2016-17.
