Grade Configuration Steering Committee Minutes

Nov. 21, 2016: Facilities

  • Welcome, with introductions deemed no longer necessary in the interest of time

  • Announcement by Lily Htoo, ENL home school coordinator, soliciting donations for families

  • Review of ground rules for committee work and norms

  • Icebreaker: "Just Like Me"

  • Approval of last month's minutes

  • Review of past meetings and format for the committee's work by Dr. Butterworth

  • Presentation on facilities by Bill Hogan, Assistant Superintendent for Business Affairs, available here

    • Discussion of the renovations that will be done to the 50 North Lark facility to provide an equitable middle school

      • Return to the discussion of equity, the central theme of the committee's work

    • Presentation of various "what if" scenarios provided to promote the discussion on future middle-school enrollment

      • Reminder that no changes can be made for the 2017-18 school year; the 50 North Lark facility is planned to be the interim middle school for the next 3-5 years

    • Discussion of the transition of all sixth grades into middle-school buildings

    • Discussion of the demographic study, special populations and the potential need for a fourth middle school

    • Discussion of optimal middle school sizes and the potential for thematic schools, which will be addressed in the January presentation on successful urban schools

  • Time allotted for observer comments, but none were present

  • Final thoughts, introduction to next month's topic and a reminder on the importance of regularly attending committee meetings
