Four Albany High spring sports teams capture

Big 10 championships

For the boys' tennis team, the boys' and girls' outdoor track teams, and the boys' baseball team, the end of conference play meant one thing - Big 10 championships!

The tennis team edged LaSalle 5-4 on May 15 in a one-match showdown on a neutral court in Bethlehem. The teams split their regular-season matches by identical 7-2 scores. In the rubber match, the Cadets took the first three singles matches, but Albany rallied with victories at Nos. 4 and 5 singles and in all three doubles matches to take the title.

It is the boys' tennis team's first Big 10 title since 2003.

The boys’ track team swept to a 6-0 record in its Big 10 dual meets this spring and locked up its second straight championship May 18 in the conference invitational at Albany High.

Kareem Morris, who led the Falcons to their first team victory in 27 years at the statewide Eddy Invitational meet at Union College on May 16, won the 100 meters and 200 meters to jump start Albany at the conference meet.

Kareem also was a member of the winning 400-meter relay team with Jalon Scott, Corey Harris and Jahmaal Arrington.

Fuad Jusic also was a double winner, taking the 400 meters and running the first leg in the 1,600-meter relay. Matthew Wu, Zine Massey and Gabe Gordon completed that victorious team.

Vincent Kemp was the winner in the pole vault as the Falcons finished with 169 total points. LaSalle was second with 148 and Bishop Gibbons a distant third with 58.

“Even though the winners earned 60 of the 169 points, a total team effort was evident to pick up 109 points,” said coach Stan Gasorowski. “This shows that every individual played a vital role in the team’s win.”

The girls' outdoor track team finished the regular season with an undefeated record of 6-0. Highlights of the year included a lopsided victory against and Bishop Gibbons on May 6 (124-48) and solid wins against Troy and Amsterdam on May 13 (100-77, 105-63 respectively).

It is the girls' outdoor track team's first Big 10 title since 2004.

The baseball team sealed at least a share of its first Big 10 title in 20 years on May 21 with a 3-0 win over Amsterdam. Patrick Landers, one of seven Falcons with four years of varsity experience, pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the last regular-season conference game.

"This feels great," Landers told the Times Union after the game. "We've never been here before. It feels good to end a four-year run getting better every year."

Justin Harris, another of the four-year varsity players, had a hit and a stolen base, and also scored a run in the clinching victory.

"What an awesome feeling, going from three wins my freshman year to this," Harris told the newspaper.

The Falcons (13-8 overall, 12-4 Big 10) can win the league title outright if Troy beats CBA on May 22. Then they will prepare for the Section II Class AA playoffs and a shot at the school's first team title in any sport since 1997.

The City School District of Albany serves approximately 8,300 students in 18 elementary, middle and high schools. In addition to neighborhood schools, the district includes several magnet schools and programs, as well as other innovative academic opportunities for students. The district is nearing the end of its comprehensive facilities project to newly build or renovate nearly all of its elementary and middle schools. The ultimate goal of the facilities project is to provide schools with the resources necessary to help students succeed in the 21st century.
