The season ended in the Section II Class AA
quarterfinals for Albany High's boys' and girls' basketball teams Feb.
28, but both teams played well in defeat against two of the area's top
teams.
The boys' team dropped a 63-50 decision to
Albany Academy at Hudson Valley Community College. The Falcons (12-10)
jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off the powerful Cadets
(21-1), who are ranked No. 2 among New York state's large schools.
Jakei Turman led Albany with 17 points, and Jeremic
Bennett had 14. The season-ending loss snapped a six-game winning streak
for the Falcons.
Later in the day, the visiting Lady Falcons took No. 1
Suburban Council seed Shenendehowa (17-4) into overtime before falling
54-48. Sophomore Kelsey Greene led Albany (12-10) with 11 points, and
seniors Shenekwa Stewart and Alexis Hauser had 10 points apiece.
Both teams won first-round matchups in a doubleheader at
Albany High on Feb. 25.
In the first game, Stewart scored 23 points to lead the
Lady Falcons to a 61-55 victory over Columbia. Seventh-grader Breahanda
Stratton added 14 points.
Turman led the way with 18 points in the boys' 61-47 win
over Shaker. Bennett had 13, and Roger West added 12.
