Basketball teams play well in elimination

The season ended in the Section II Class AA quarterfinals for Albany High's boys' and girls' basketball teams Feb. 28, but both teams played well in defeat against two of the area's top teams.

The boys' team dropped a 63-50 decision to Albany Academy at Hudson Valley Community College. The Falcons (12-10) jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off the powerful Cadets (21-1), who are ranked No. 2 among New York state's large schools.

Jakei Turman led Albany with 17 points, and Jeremic Bennett had 14. The season-ending loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Falcons.

Later in the day, the visiting Lady Falcons took No. 1 Suburban Council seed Shenendehowa (17-4) into overtime before falling 54-48. Sophomore Kelsey Greene led Albany (12-10) with 11 points, and seniors Shenekwa Stewart and Alexis Hauser had 10 points apiece.

Both teams won first-round matchups in a doubleheader at Albany High on Feb. 25.

In the first game, Stewart scored 23 points to lead the Lady Falcons to a 61-55 victory over Columbia. Seventh-grader Breahanda Stratton added 14 points.

Turman led the way with 18 points in the boys' 61-47 win over Shaker. Bennett had 13, and Roger West added 12.
