Superintendent Search

Opportunities for all community members to help inform national superintendent search

The City School District of Albany Board of Education is conducting a confidential national search to select and hire its next permanent superintendent. As it begins the process, the board is working with an experienced search consultant, the Western New York Educational Services Council, to engage a wide range of community partners in identifying the qualities and characteristics that they value in a superintendent for our diverse district of more than 9,600 students.

The process will include individual interviews with community leaders, and focus groups with students, staff, parents, not-for-profit partners, local business partners, clergy, elected representatives and other stakeholders. The board also is providing two additional opportunities for all community members to provide input:

  • A short online survey:

  • A community forum:

    • Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m., at the Harriet Gibbons Student Services Center, 75 Watervliet Ave.

Please take advantage of one or both of these opportunities to tell us your thoughts about this critical position for our students, our families and our community.

Board launches national search to hire next permanent superintendent

The confidential national search for the City School District of Albany's next permanent superintendent began in November 2016 when the Board of Education approved a consultant and a timeline for the process.

The board hired Western New York Educational Services Council on Nov. 3 as its search partner. The organization has assisted in hundreds of successful searches in cities such as Rochester, Rome, Oswego, Oneonta and New York City. Board Secretary Anne Savage is the board's point person for the search.

Savage delivered this presentation about the process at the board's Nov. 17 meeting. In addition to the community forum planned for Jan. 18, here are additional important dates in the search timeline:

  • March 31 -- Application deadline

  • April -- Select 6-8 semifinalists; conduct background checks

  • May -- Interview semifinalists; select 2-3 finalists

  • June -- Interview finalists; select permanent superintendent
